New Skaven Lists

Going to be getting in a couple of games tomorrow; my first with the new rats.  Lists of numbers and powers tends to make my eyes roll back in my head, so I’m going to start off with a list that looks a lot like the list I ran with the old book, save for a few, small changes.

Ratputin Revised
Skaven – 2,250 points

Lords & Heroes
Warlord – General, Bonebreaker Rat Ogre, Shield of Distraction, Weeping Blade
Chieftain – BSB, Shield, Shroud of Dripping Death

Core

Giant Rats x21 – Packmasters x4
Skavenslaves x20 – Musician, Shields
Skavenslaves x20 – Musician, Shields

Special
Gutter Runners x6 – Slings
Jezzails x9
Poisoned Wind Globadiers x9 – Champion, Poisoned Wind Mortar
Rat Ogres x3 – Champion, Packmaster

Rare
Doomwheel
Hellpit Abomination

This is my usual list, but with the Specials and Rares shaken up.  I’m not convinced that the Warp-Lightning Cannon is going to be all that amazing, now, and the Doomwheel and Abomination look like too much fun.  Gutter Runners are still there, as are the Jezzails (who I expect to be terrible, now).  Globadiers and Ogres are in there more to be tried out than anything else.

I’ve also just fiddled with some clan-specific lists.  I have no doubt that these are pretty horrible lists, but it’s fun to just think about them.  The Moulder list especially; I’d have to base a few more rats to pull it off (since it involves 111!) and probably have to track down a few more packmasters (I need 22!).

Clan Pestilens

Lords & Heroes
Lord Skrolk
Plague Priest – Lvl 2, Plague Furnace, Flail, Shadow Magnet Trinket
Plague Priest – Lvl 2, Great Pox Rat, Poisoned Attacks, Extra Hand Weapon, Dispel Scroll x2

Plague Monks x30 – Full Command

Special
Plague Censer Bearers x6
Plague Censer Bearers x6
Plague Censer Bearers x6
Plague Censer Bearers x6

Rare
Plagueclaw Catapult
Plagueclaw Catapult

I expect this is a terrible list.  Only two blocks of real troops?  And they’re Plague Monks?  Hopefully, the Shadow Magnet Trinket and Storm Banner help keep everyone alive long enough to start stabbing and biting.

Also, Skrolk is ridiculously costed.  Way, way, way too expensive.

Clan Moulder

Lords & Heroes
Throt the Unclean
Chieftain – BSB, Shield, Shroud of Dripping Death
Warlock Engineer – Lvl 1, Dispel Scroll x2

Core
Giant Rats x25 – Skweel Gnawtooth, Packmasters x4
Giant Rats x22 – Master Moulder, Packmasters x3

Rat Ogres x4 – Champion, Master Moulder, Packmaster

Rare
Hellpit Abomination

This really could be a lot of fun.  A huge horde army: four blocks of 25+ models and four blocks of tiny, fast, maneuverable 6 models.  In the old book, I tried tiny blocks of giant rats to use as redirectors: they were fantastic at it, but I eventually went to large blocks of them because of restrictions from the Mainstay rule.  Now that that’s gone, I’m definitely going to load up on tiny little trash drops that cost 23 point a pop and can march block and charge redirect.

Rat Ogres, I’m not sure about.  I don’t know if blocks of two or three or four or what are the way to go.  I feel like two might be to small, four is too big, and three too light on Packmasters.  We’ll have to see.

  • This is what I am looking at to be my first/main 2250 list. I am going to get another box of new Storm Vermin this weekend and start converting my Warlord on a War-litter. I need to figure out what I am going to use as a palanquin, but the Warlord himself will be a Queek conversion.

Warlord: war-litter, enchanted shield, warlock-augmented weapon, foul pendant
Plague Priest: lvl 2, dispel scroll, furnace
Warlock Engineer: lvl 2, warp-energy condenser, dispel scroll
Chieftain: BSB, war banner, shield, halberd

30 Storm Vermin, fangleader, standard, musician
25 Clan Rats: spear, shield, clawleader, standard, musician
25 Clan Rats: shield, clawleader, standard, musician
    10 Giant Rats: 2 packmasters
    20 Slaves: musician
    20 Slaves: musician

25 Plague Monks: musician, standard, bringer-of-the-word, storm banner
    6 Plague Censer Bearers
    6 Plague Censer Bearers

    Hell Pit Abomination: warpstone spikes
    Doom Wheel

  • I’ve been waiting to see what your redux list would look like, and it does look interesting – far more interesting than the clan-specific ones, IMO. I look forward to hearing how the assassin and gutters work out for you, as both those eshin elites kinda stump me on how to make them work …

Rhellion, looks like a strong list, has a good mix of the fun and the good stuff in the new list: 2x PCB, 1x furnace, 1x abomination are all strong and cool, but you’ve got the doomwheel and a warlord for a bit more variety. Hope it works for you!

Since we’re posting up our first lists, here’s mine:

    L: Warlord – fellblade, shield
    H: Assassin – warpstone stars
H: Engineer – pipes of piebald, dispel scroll, level 1
H: Chieftain – BSB, banner of the under-empire, shield

C: 30 Clanrats – full command, shields, warpfire thrower
C: 25 Clanrats – full command, shields, ratling gun
C: 25 Clanrats – full command, shields, ratling gun
    C: 20 Slaves – musician
    C: 20 Slaves – musician
    C: 2 Rat Swarms

S: 4 Rat Ogres – MBRO, Skweel Gnawtooth, packmaster
    S: 9 Gutter Runners – deathrunner
    S: 6 Jezzails
    S: 7 Globadiers

    R: Abomination – warpstone spikes
    R: Warp Lightning Cannon

Yea, I decided to go balls out and run the Fell :D All told there’s a lot of experimentation going on here, trying to find uses for models in my collection (only the abomination and 20 slaves need new models).

    – Salvage

  • Why the war-litter over the Rat Ogre? Is it the +1 Save and the cost?

I’m going to have to consider using spears, now that they cost even less. Until now, I’ve shied away from them because an extra rank of attacks generally wouldn’t make much of a difference. For ~10 points, though…

  • The Rat Ogre can be attacked, and he doesn’t have an armor save, does he? Enemy General swoops in with a Dragon, kills the Rat Ogre, and gets +3 CR. At least this was how our conversation last Tuesday went when discussing the two.

Spears have won me 3 combats in as many games… and in my very small amount of WHFB experience that is saying a lot. I think when I start buying rats for another large unit of CR’s they will be with spears as well.

  • Fellblade!? Yikes! 100 points buys two blocks of slaves! And they don’t have a 1/3 chance of doing a wound every turn! S 10 is awesome, but yikes!

I’m definitely sold on the Warpstone Spikes.

I found the Bonebreaker to be reasonably survivable: he outlasted my Warlord. :) Being able to be targeted in the unit’s rough, though. I’m now much more enamored of the War Litter.

I’m going to give my clanrats spears in the next game to see how they perform. For 12.5 points a unit, it’s cheap enough to give it a try, for sure.

  • What’s really funny is that with the clan moulder list, you don’t have any special choices used. Throt also lets you take 2 units of rat ogres as core as well. :D

throt is pretty great for a themed list. and he’s not a bad fighty character as well.

  • I know! Any yet, a lot of the Fantasy people would complain, because I’m using a “special character.”
