Wednesday Workbench

Wednesday Workbench 20131120

Crap! Things have gotten away from me: here’s a workbench snapshot.

I’ve actually been somewhat productive over the past few weeks: I just need to clear off the table, set up the lightbox, and take some pics. In the meantime, here’s what I’ve got half done.

That’s a Bones gesso-priming proof-of-concept (which was immediately determined a success, other minis were painted, and I just need to circle back and wrap it up), the last few archers before I can run my Normans fully painted, a Battlefleet Gothic cruiser for the Rogue Trader game I’m planning, and Michael Paradoffsky von Thorn; a By Fire & Sword fig I got with the book (I backed their Kickstarter, but didn’t buy any figs; I’m really rethinking that, and want to paint a model in 15mm first).

Wednesday Workbench

It’s not that I haven’t been hobbying, it’s that I haven’t been hobbying much.  That changed over the weekend, though: I’m on a roll.  (Let’s hope that momentum sticks around to and through when I’m told I have to stop working.)

Those are the same Flems from last time; they’ve seen some headway.  In fact, they’re almost done.  Just need to focus on them and wrap them up.  I distracted myself, though, by finally figuring out an approach to the horses that was good enough.  I’m not in love with it, but I’ve never painted horses before (I know, right?), and I don’t want to let perfect get in the way of good.  They’re 15 minutes of work away from done.  Riders to follow (and I expect them to go quickly).

The Stanktini

Because I’m a goof, one of the finds I’m most excited about while digging through the Game Room bins was a pair (one needs stripping) of 1992 Imperial Steam Tanks.

2013-09-04 13.45.00

Why is this?  They’re tiny.  Yes, the wheels are missing, but they don’t add that much height.

No, really. You could probably fit at least one in one of the current Steam Tanks. Like a clanking, hissing Tervigon, you could have a Steam Tank give birth to little baby Steam Tanks.

2013-09-04 13.45.34

My first thought was, “This is so small, I bet I could hide it behind cavalry.” I could do this list as a goof, only up the douche factor by hiding those Stanks behind the block of Inner Circle jerkfaces.

Did I mention how small it was?

2013-09-04 13.45.48

Later, I was talking about it (because, in case you hadn’t noticed, I’m excited about the find), and Eric suggested that it might be small enough to run as a Doom Flayer.

2013-09-04 13.46.09

I’m not sure that it is, but it’s definitely right for something ratty that wouldn’t pass OSHA codes.

Medieval Man-at-Arms

1-2013-09-02 15.34.40

I picked up Saga back at Historicon, and I’ve been looking forward to putting it on the table and rolling them fancy dice around it.   The plan was, initially, to use Gripping Beast Saxon Thegns as Hearthguard, Gripping Beast Dark Ages Warriors as, um, Warriors, and one of those sweet Aenglish models I got from one of Tre Manor’s Red Box Games Kickstarters as my Warlord. (Worrying about Levies later.)

I’ve had some Saxon Thegns on my workbench basically ever since.

When one of my several August trips was postponed, I jumped on the chance to power through converting and painting a new unit for the NoVA Open.  When I finished that with time to spare, I chugged some crazy juice and decided to paint a model specifically for the Capital Palette. I’d had Captain Whistlelock prepped, so it was on.

The plan for him early on was to paint him up using Rush heraldry.

1-Rush Banner

It’s anachronistic: unless I’m turned around (possible), this is Tudor-era, quite some time after Normans and Vikings were stabbing each other over rule of England.. but who cares?

He came together quite quickly.  Because I was doing him for competition, I went with more and thinner layers of everything. I also gave into the impulse to keep highlighting lighter and lighter basically everywhere.

The metallics are my usual lazy drek, but fortunately there’s not much metal, so it’s tough to spot.

The only stumbling block I hit was with the shield. I’d printed out some decals with the horses from the above image at ~4mm wide, hoping to use them as a guide to get the shapes roughly the same. Well, that didn’t work out at all… so, after a moment of panic, I put on my big boy painter pants, did a couple of test freehands, and then did them on the shield.

I’ve never really done much in the way of freehanding before: mostly just fake text on books; never shapes like this. They’re not perfect (and boy does it show up close, like in these pictures) but they’re really, really good for a first try. I’m super-proud of them.

It was worth the effort: not only was I pleased with him, he was able to place Silver in his category (Historical – Small).  It wasn’t the most competitive Historical category (single figure / small is usually the most competitive category, but there was so much amazing 54mm figures, especially in the historical group), but still: that’s a huge achievement.  This is probably the biggest win I’ve had, yet.

(I think he looks best in the lighting in that picture immediately above.)

I’ve had some difficulty getting a good HDR glamshot, however. This is thwarting my using him as a permanent Facebook profile pic.

This also means that I’m pretty leery of carting him around to game with: particularly because that dang sword’s broken off twice. Just means I’ll have to build and paint another one.  I’ll get over it.  (In fact, I’ve already done the first half of that.)

I will say that this means dire things about how quickly I expect to bang out Hell Dorado minis.

Workbench Snapshot

2013-08-18 13.55.40

I’m going to be unable to hobby for the next few days and, since I neglected to do a Workbench Wednesday the other day, I figured I’d do one now.

I was supposed to be TDY this past week but when it got cancelled at the last minute I decided to seize the opportunity to bang out some Plaguebearers for my NoVA Open army.  They’re not done (as you can see), but they’re maybe 75%: that flesh is the longest part of the process.

While I’m not ashamed of them, I’m not especially proud of them. Lots of corners cut, and I can’t help but see them. Given the timeline involved, though, I’m not letting perfect get in the way of done.

Herald of Devastation

10-2013-08-03 12.41.28

This is the last mini I needed to do for NoVA.

I’d thought all I needed was a Bloodletter with an Instrument of Chaos, but I was wrong: I forgot that I’d included my Changeling conversion in my Pink Horror count.  Reasonable, since he used to be an upgrade.  So, I had to dig up an Ungor and grenade launcher for another Horror.  I’m on a really tight timeline, though, and that shook out to not be practical.

Then I realized I could cut it another way: instead of pulling the Changeling model out of the unit and replace him with a regular Blood Horror, I could just leave that model in the unit and do a new Herald model.

(Remember: since this army is really all about me shouting, “BLOOD FOR THE BLOOD BLOOD,” they’re Blood Horrors and not Pink Horrors, and this will be a Herald of Khorne, Devastator, not of Tzeentch.)

A quick dig in the bits box and I had this:

So, not a lot in the way of conversion, but it’s over the top and makes me think of P.A.G.A.N., which means it’s perfect.

Wednesday Workbench

1-2013-07-24 11.37.26

Those drones are a cheat: they’re done; I just need to get ’em in the lightbox and photograph them for real. I’m pleased with them.

I’m also bangin’ out a Saga warband.  Not sure what’ they’ll be, but that’s Red Box’s Captain Whistlelock (by way of his still-suffering Kickstarter) as the Warlord and and some Gripping Beast Saxon Thegns and Dark Ages Warriors as Hearthguard and Warriors (respectively).

Finishing out the warband has to wait: my number one hobby goal is to assemble and paint a Bloodletter with Instrument: the one model I need for my NOVA army to be good to go.

So, I’ve been slowly grinding away at some Fire Warriors with what little painting time I seem to have nowadays.  Most of this time has been cycling through different arrangements of turquoise, trying to get something worked up that I’m happy with.

Somewhere along the way, I remembered that I painted up this Demigryph using a turquoise that I was exceedingly pleased with, so I checked my notes, and included it as one of the test schemes.

That got me this guy:

Tau FW Turquoise

I’m pretty happy with the result (especially after settling on a better approach to the Fire Caste symbol).

So, I basically redid all of the other in-progress Fire Warriors: another basecoat, more turquoise, etc.  This process has felt interminable: not enough time to paint, going back over stuff I’d already painted, too many minis (7) in the batch, etc, etc.  But I was blessed with some time Friday so I knuckled down and powered through the bastards: washing them before turning in Friday night.

Then, Saturday morning, I realized I used the wrong wash.  I pulled my mix from some notes I’d kept… but not the right notes.

This is what I’m talking about:

BN9QliFCYAA4g7U

It’s noticeably more blue and not-at-all green here. I assure you, the difference is even more significant to the naked eye.

So, that’s the last, what, month? down the drain. I could repaint these guys, but given that most of them already have two full coats of paint on them, a third isn’t going to do them any favors… nevermind the psychological difficulty involved in painting them again.

So, I’m shoving these guys to the back of the table.  I’ll probably finish them at some point (they’re, like, 75% there) and maybe use them as test models for weathering or something. Blargh.

Wednesday Workbench / Tau!

A day late, sure, but it’s got to be Wednesday somewhere, right?  (What do you mean that’s not how it works?)

2013-06-12 07.26.00

Sigmar help me, I’ve actually done some painting.  Not a lot, but given how the past month’s been: I’ll take what I can get.

There’s been quite a bit of faffing around with the exact paint color scheme I want to use on my Tau 2.0. I’m still not sure that I’m in love with it, but it’s definitely Good Enough.

2013-06-12 07.26.31

2013-06-12 07.26.35

Here’s a finished, final model: all he needs is some static grass on the base and varnishing.  Sean P. will likely be happy to note that, in the end, I went with Dragonforge’s Lost Empires bases. In the end, it came down to variety, and thinking I could get the effect I wanted.  It’s turned out okay, I think.

2013-06-12 07.27.43

The only thing I’m unhappy with is the Fire Caste symbol.  Previously, I’d painted it black-on-white, and I don’t think it ever looked good. The slightest imperfection in getting lines straight and shapes even stood out. I did some quick alternative color mockups below: the second from the left might have hastily been done in Gimp, but it’s not too far from what black-on-white actually looks like. :/

Tau Symbols

The more I think about it, the more I like the rightmost one. I think I’m going to give that a spin before I hit the model with varnish.

Hopefully, I’ll be able to make good, quick progress with these guys.
