Wednesday(ish) Workbench

1-2013-05-23 15.31.49

Progress proceeds (slowly) on the Tau. As you can see, I’ve got some Fire Warriors basecoated, and I’m starting in on a final test model.  I’ve put together some Pathfinders, and I’m starting in on a… I dunno. Either a Hammerhead or a Sky Ray. Both, I suppose.

2-2013-05-23 15.31.55

What I’m doing here is something I’ve wanted to do ever since deciding to revisit my Tau a few years ago: smoothing out the sides of my tanks. Devilfish carry troops, yes, but how many hatches does a Hammerhead or Sky Ray need?

Or so my thinking goes.

Instead of putting the hatches on, I’m filling the space with some 2mm plasticard (not as smoothly cut as I’d have liked) with the gaps filled in with greenstuff and the whole mess sanded super-smooth.  It feels perfectly smooth, but we’ll see what it looks like when it’s been primed.

I’m probably going to do some plasticard stuff to the back of the tank when it’s assembled. That smooth space might work on the sides, but I’m not crazy about it on the back.

Anyway, we’ll see if it works out or not next week, I expect.

I still have a blog and hobby, right?

Nothing fancy here, just some color tests as I try to adapt my old color scheme to something a little more involved than “just make sure everything is covered.”

The base is about where I want it; there’s a wash to apply to the red dirt, but it’s the same setup that I used on my Orks.

The model’s not a done deal, but it’s what I used to work through exactly what colors (besides “grey” and “turquoise”) I’m using.  If you look at this and then look at the above model and squint, though, that’s kinda sorta what the finished product will look like.

Sammael & Ravenwing Librarian

2013-04-27 16.24.38

Finally, at last, the Ravenwing models I started on a bajillion years ago are done, varnished, photographed, and (now) posted.

I started out both of these models with a lot of energy, but for some reason, they both turned into total, complete slogs.

I’m not especially happy with either of them; I’m just happy to be done with them.

Sammael

I bought into Dark Angels on this model when they first released it. It’s boss. Of course, for some reason I never got around to painting or really using him back when.

My new planned Dark Angels list calls for him, though, so I finally picked him back up.

It’s the metal model, of course. I’d considered selling it and replacing it with a Finecast model… but decided the hassle of dealing with metal < the hassle of repairing Finecast. I was wrong. This is too much freaking metal. Blech.

I’m really proud of the base. I think it came out really well. It looks a lot better than a clear plastic rod, and really makes the jetbike look like it’s floating. Of course,it’s holding up 8 lbs of metal, so I’m terrified about the glue not holding. It’s actually got a freaking nail behind that wall bit.

Librarian

It’s a Librarian and he’s on a bike, yep.  I feel like I did more greenstuffing on him than actually shows. I don’t know why.

The arm’s magnetized, though. Force Axes > Force Swords right now, but who knows down the line?

Anyway, they’re done, and I’m back to working on Tau.

Wednesday Workbench

1-2013-04-09 20.33.42

No real surprises here. The Librarian is actually done, save for some airbrushing on the weapon (that I probably should have done before painting everything else). Ditto with Sammael.

Getting the kit out is pretty likely today, I think/hope, so I might actually put these dudes in my rear-view.

I found a bunch of un-eBay’d Circle Orboros stuff over the weekend, including a nearly-complete Kromac the Ravenous of which I’m quite proud. I hope to wrap him up and, probably, put him up on eBay. Daddy’s gotta buy more Tau, after all.

Rats for the Cure 2013

Rats for the Cure Banner

Somehow, I missed that this year’s Battle for the Cure was scheduled for April 6 until just a few days ago.

It’s something that I look forward to every year, so I signed up and immediately got a bug up my ass about painting something new for it.

I’m a long way away from having a pink unit, much less a pink army, but a new model’s certainly progress, right?

Anyway, I’ve had the BaneLords Blunt-Claw model in my bits tub for a while, so I pulled him out, put him together, stuck a Bloodletter banner on him. Nothing fancy at all.

Rats for the Cure Warlord 1

Rats for the Cure Warlord 2

Rats for the Cure Warlord 4

Rats for the Cure Warlord 3

Hadn’t really thought through that it’d be basically a fat, gross naked mole-rat, but it is what it is.

I’m quite pleased with how the freehand on the banner came out. That’s probably the best freehand I’ve managed yet.

Wednesday Workbench

Not much progress from last week. Painting this big ass hunk of metal without rubbing said paint off of the model is slow-going… not to mention that free time’s been pretty scarce this past week.

I’m done with the Librarian, though; the power-axe I’d been waiting on showed up earlier today (along with paint for the Leviathan and the Daemon Codex).

Speaking of which; that’s going to be some processing to do, there.

Wednesday Workbench

Funny, as much time as I spent goofing around my workspace this weekend, it doesn’t really feel like I’ve gotten all that much done!

I’ve started working on Sammael, but it’s slow going. He should paint up, like, lightning-fast… but he’s such a big damn chunk of metal that I can’t mount him to a grip while I paint him. So, instead I’ve got to grip the model, which would result in paint getting rubbed off.  I don’t want that, so I’ve been hitting it with some Dullcote once a night, which translates into slow progress.

It’s good that I’m finally getting around to painting him; the Sammael model is what inspired me to pick up Dark Angels back in 4E. It’s some sort of shame that I’m only getting around to painting him now.

The base is shaping up great, though, huh?  I literally cannot get enough of Cryx Bane Base -> Cryx Bane Highlight -> Khaki -> Sepia.

Also: I converted a Librarian on a bike. I feel like I spent a lot of time screwing around with greenstuff on him and, yet, I don’t really see it on the model. C’est la vie. He’ll be done when a power axe shows up in the mail.

Wednesday Workbench

I almost forgot to do one of these!
I wonder who or what that could be a base for…
I’ve clearly picked up the Green Stuff Industries Tentacle Makers, and I’ve been having a lot of fun with it.  It’s one of those things that looks useful but unnecessary… until you have one and want to do cables and wires and stuff on everything. That rubble looks dodgy, but paints up well enough.
Anyway, that’s the only thing on the table right now. The Crusader’s been primed, but I realized I probably need to invest in some paint, first (which means a Warstore order, since nobody local carries P3).  Hopefully, I’ll sort out the above and start putting together some bikers.

Brood Horror!

I finished the Brood Horror!  Woooooooo!

After a couple of false starts, I finally knocked out the Brood Horror. Although I’m sure I could have finished it faster, I can’t help but feel like I got it done in pretty good time.

The ratskin came together pretty easily: I used an airbrush to do the midtone, then backed in some shading, then cleaned it up with a brush before highlighting.

The rashy skin was more problematic. So much of this thing is covered in disgusting, nasty rashes, pustules that I had to do something to keep it interesting. Although my mind’s eye had a much more multi-colored rainbow of diseases, I’m happy enough with it.

Now, I just need to put this stinking, foul thing into some games.

Anyway, behold the photodump!

There’s a tongue that goes in there, but the damn thing kept breaking off. Finally, I got sick of gluing it back in, so I left it out. The hole for it is probably creepier, anyway.

Some of the sculpting is more than a little dodgy. There are some things that are clearly not enormous pustules, and probably couldn’t be anything but rat… but are not very well sculpted. I did what I could; I doubt anyone but me will notice.

Leviathan Crusader!

So, I got my Dreamforge Games Kickstarter reward in the mail on Wednesday.

I’ve gotten a couple of Kickstarter rewards so far (though, let’s face it, not as many as I should have by this point :cough:) and to be frank… as excited as I’d been about most of this stuff while pledging, I’ve been less excited about it when it showed up. I can’t muster the energy to assemble (forget paint) Sedition Wars. I’m debating eBaying my Mantic Orcs. The Red Box stuff’ll come out eventually.

For some reason, I wasn’t super-excited about the Dreamforge stuff when pledging; interested, but not pumped.  But, when it got here, I couldn’t wait to open it up and start putting it together.

Anyway, y’all don’t care about that.

I did some Twitterin’ about it as I went through the unboxing/assembly process. Might as well repeat it here.

That’s a pretty dang big base. Still need to figure out what I’m going to do with it in terms of terrain/decoration, etc.

On digging through the box, I noticed it comes with a screwdriver. That means it’s not a model, it’s a frakking Ikea kit.

That said: the screwdriver really kinda sucks. I don’t advise you using it; grab a different, slightly larger screwdriver and use that instead.

The leg is… big. Because it’s a big dang model. That’s why i took the photo, but on the second time around it serves a different purpose. See that hole on the top of the foot?  There’s a piece that goes there. It’s not there on the model, because it’s not there in the instructions. This is the first of several skipped steps in the instructions.

Mark’s aware of the instructions being imperfect, and has posted some updates.  Unfortunately, the Leviathan Crusader updates only address where the flat-out wrong piece numbers are used. They don’t really address the skipped steps.

Unfortunately, momentum carried me through assembly without thinking to take pictures or note the missing steps. If I had a second, I’d do that… but I don’t so, c’est la vie.  If you take your time, dry fit your pieces and then look at what the model’s supposed to look before you start the next step before you glue anything into place, you’ll be okay.

UPDATE: Updated instructions (that hit the missing pieces) can be found here.

Here’s the assemble-ished model.  I’ve taken it apart into sub-assemblies for painting (arms, legs, torso, pelvis, shield, pelvic pistons, smoke stacks).

The painting might start today, but probably won’t.
